The Western Region of British Railways closely followed the network of the former Great Western Railway. It reached the south-west counties of Devon and Cornwall and the southern half of Wales. The mainline out of London Paddington was originally “Brunel’s Billiard Table” for its exceptional engineering, built for speed.
