Irish Republic and Northern Ireland

The historical network was heavily shaped by the 1921 partition of Ireland. Prior to partition, major integrated companies like the Great Northern Railway (GNR) operated seamlessly across the island. The London Midland & Scottish also had a significant presence in the north. Border creation introduced distinct jurisdictions, customs inspections, and separate transport policies. These administrative hurdles complicated cross-border operations and ultimately split network oversight between Coras Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) in the Republic and the Ulster Transport Authority (UTA) in Northern Ireland.

During the mid-20th century, the network underwent a dramatic technological shift as steam was phased out in favour of diesel traction to lower operating costs. However, dieselization could not stop widespread line closures. Growing private car ownership and road-focused transport policies triggered aggressive network rationalization in the 1950s and 1960s. Hundreds of miles of track—particularly rural branch lines, cross-border connections, and narrow-gauge railways—were dismantled, leaving major regions like the North West without rail infrastructure.

Today, after decades of shrinkage, the remaining network is undergoing a modern renaissance. Major cross-border planning initiatives, such as the All-Island Strategic Rail Review, alongside urban transit expansions like Dublin’s DART+ and the Cork Area Commuter Rail project, aim to revitalize key corridors and restore lost regional connectivity.  Belfast has a new transport hub – Grand Central Station – and inter-city service frequencies have improved significantly across the island.
