Description

Anthony Denaro describes creating a single, legible map combining all NYC transit services covered by the Unlimited MetroCard. Prompted by free subway–bus transfers introduced in 1998 and the lack of integrated wayfinding, he argues most riders—especially those beyond a 15-minute walk to a subway—need a unified diagram. Current MTA bus maps are dense, borough-specific, and absent at many stops; the MTA rarely highlights fare integration. Denaro’s “Bullet Map” merges subways, NYC Transit and MTA buses, Select Bus Service, NICE and Bee-Line, while excluding PATH, LIRR, Metro‑North, express buses and non-MTA ferries. Design principles: focus on regular riders, show subway stations and main streets, avoid insets, use one scale, full names, and adhere to NYCT styling. Mapping challenges included Queens’ dispersed layout and Brooklyn’s six street grids; a 22.5/45/90° angle system solved layout issues. The map aims to clarify transfers, promote surface transit use, and invites feedback on design and accuracy.
