Distributed by the millions at local gas stations across North America—and eventually expanding into Europe and Latin America—these maps evolved beyond simple navigational tools into indispensable promotional items for brands like Texaco, Gulf, Shell, Esso (Standard Oil), Mobil, and Chevron.

The Dominance of the "Big Three" Cartographers

While the maps bore the branding of major energy conglomerates, their production was dominated by three specialized cartographic houses:

• Rand McNally & Company: Leveraging its origins in railroad guides, the Chicago firm established early dominance in consumer road mapping, producing vast lines for companies like Gulf and Pure Oil.
• General Drafting Company: Founded by Finnish immigrant Otto G. Lindberg, General Drafting secured an exclusive contract with Standard Oil of New Jersey (Esso/Exxon) in 1923, maintaining a legendary partnership for over six decades.
• H. M. Gousha Company: Founded in 1926 by former Rand McNally executive Harry M. Gousha, this firm rapidly captured market share by undercutting rivals and offering vibrant, highly readable designs for brands such as Chevron, Shell, and Texaco.
