Description
Doug Rose argues that Transport for London’s May 2022 Tube map has drifted far from Henry Beck’s 1933 principles, sacrificing clarity by adding too much information while remaining the same small physical size. He identifies key flaws: cramped station names and inappropriate use of New Johnston type, rigid 45° geometry producing distracting zigzags, misleading interchange depictions, overemphasis on fare zones, and inconsistent accessibility symbols. Rose recounts his 2004 commission and subsequent redesign attempts, emphasizing a proper design process (Discover, Define, Design, Deliver) often neglected by TfL. His proposed solution starts from scratch: a larger A3-format map using 30° diagonals, more legible type, rhythmic name spacing, reduced kinks, clearer interchange treatment, subdued fare-zone graphics, and accessibility details moved to an index. He warns that marketing-driven comprehensiveness harms usability and urges purpose-led cartography to restore legibility and better support passengers’ journey planning.
