Description
The author, with extensive experience in commercial and government mapping projects, explains computerised mapping’s evolution, distinguishing it from GIS and stressing that digital cartography is a distinct tool with unique benefits and pitfalls. Early high-cost investments and misguided attempts to simply recreate existing maps digitally taught the industry to prioritize databases that enable multiple outputs, frequent updates, and varied scales. Successful projects cited include the London Bus database and a GPS/satellite-based system for Burlington Northern that improved safety and saved fuel. Key issues remain data capture, output costs, standards, and the enduring need for cartographic design skills despite improved on-screen tools. Rapid technological change favors open, “best-of-breed” systems and strategic planning: build adaptable databases with a long-term (≈10-year) view, avoid proprietary lock-in, consider outsourcing production to specialists, and focus on applications that maximize exploitation of digital data.
