Description

In February 2010 Transport for London demonstrated new online bus maps developed after user research, design and testing to address perceptions and web usage needs. Buses account for 3.3 million daily journeys (including tram) versus 2.2 million on the Tube, and bus-related web traffic—maps, live news and planned works—significantly outstrips tube pages. While buses enjoy a strong public image for value, inclusivity and improvement, users rate them less well for reliability, modernity, unfamiliar journeys and safety. The redesigned maps let users search by postcode, address, landmark, station or route; list nearby routes; show full routes, aggregated and individual stops, endpoints and 24-hour services; and switch directions. Interactive features include clicking stops for timetables, frequency and interchange info, links to the journey planner, print and a text-accessible version. The changes aim to make bus travel feel more predictable and reliable online, with next-phase features to display multiple routes together and enhanced comparison via zooming and panning.
