Description

TfL commissioned 2CV to evaluate the Oyster and ATOC London maps to inform future design or consolidation. Using five station intercepts, 80 customer interviews, expert review, and follow-up tasks, the research found both maps are primarily used for way‑finding—especially planning and navigating Tube journeys. The Tube map element is central to orientation and user confidence; customers rarely distinguish between the two maps and typically use whichever is most accessible. The report recommends integration (using the Oyster map as the development basis) unless there is a strong business reason to retain separate maps. Future designs should follow five principles: information hierarchy (prioritise way‑finding), spatial representation (clear zones, landmarks, and structure), tools and devices (clear keys, station finder, symbols), macro aesthetics (balanced, recognisable visuals) and language (clear title, coverage and tone). Specific suggestions include removing non‑essential detail, clarifying titles, optimising codes to distinguish Tube and rail, and including brand logos while ensuring any sponsorship does not compromise map clarity.
