Description

In January 1983 MAS Survey Research measured awareness and attitudes to house‑to‑house distribution (October 1982) of London Transport timetable booklets for Harrow and Bromley (samples: Harrow 448, Bromley 502). Prompted recall was 19% in Harrow and 25% in Bromley (spontaneous 11% and 17%). Wastage was low; 17% (Harrow) and 22% (Bromley) kept the booklet, 14% and 18% looked at it, and 8% and 11% used its information, suggesting travel‑generating effects. Respondents who had looked at the booklets named more local routes and had slightly better knowledge of frequencies. There was strong demand for maps (50% supported a bus‑route map, 34% an area map) and interest in local amenities information. On a 1–10 scale, household delivery scored 6.3 (Harrow) and 7.2 (Bromley). Indirect estimates suggest generated receipts (~£17,000) about double production/distribution costs (~£8,000), producing an estimated net revenue and 130,000 generated passenger miles, indicating the project’s likely viability despite uncertainty.
