Description

The ATOC Code of Practice (1997/1998) prescribes mandatory standards and best-practice for presenting rail timetable information across publications, station posters and electronic Customer Information Systems (CIS). It requires clear distinction between comprehensive and summary material, GBPRT layout, standard symbols, 24-hour clock, ATOC two-character operator codes, National Rail contact details and neutral/joint branding unless singly funded. A–Z and line-of-route posters must list all relevant trains except limited exceptions. CIS specifications (Appendix C) define screen types—Next Train Indicators, Departure/Arrival Summaries, Combined screens and Special Notices—and mandate content: platform, published time, origin/destination, calling points and punctuality, with optional operator logo, catering and class. Displays must support multilingual text, link to Rugby Time Signal, clear trains on departure, and present multi-screen lists for long routes. VDUs should use Rail Alphabet/Helvetica, colour VGA graphics and 12 text lines; LCDs should be transflective with 2–5 lines and scrolling. The Code is reviewed annually and assigns responsibilities for special-event timetables.
