Description

This 1993 study assessed night-bus information needs through four discussion groups (users, potential users, pragmatists, phobics). Night travel differs from daytime: leisure travellers are social and risk-tolerant in groups, solo travellers (especially phobics) feel vulnerable, tired or intoxicated passengers need certainty, and workers want reliable schedules. Transport choices are driven by group dynamics, money, location and spontaneity; pre-journey planning is rare. Existing materials largely fail: fold-up maps and booklets are too large and irrelevant, while destination lists and clear posters are useful. Respondents want compact, durable, wallet-sized leaflets for one to three local night routes, showing stop locations, simple timetables/frequency, fares (including day-ticket validity), and interchange info. Bus-stop signage must be highly visible, lit, and indicate where to catch each route; major hubs need linked posters and real-time kiosks. Inside buses, audible stop announcements are essential for navigation and reassurance. Telephone info should be promoted and widely displayed. Overall, people need concise, on-the-spot information rather than extensive home materials.
