Description

This ATOC Code of Practice (Revision 0, 1997; reprinted 1998) sets mandatory standards and best-practice guidelines for presenting passenger timetable information across Britain’s integrated rail network. It requires a consistent ‘‘information trail’’—pre‑journey publications, station departure posters/summary displays, platform information and on‑train destination indicators—so customers can identify services operated by multiple Train Operating Companies (TOCs). Key mandatory rules include clear labeling of comprehensive versus summary timetables, use of GBPRT table formats and symbols, 24‑hour clock, display of TOC two‑character codes and National Rail enquiry number, approved leaflet sizes, and branding restrictions (no operator/owner branding on multi‑operator A–Z or Line of Route posters). Electronic Customer Information Systems (CIS) must avoid non‑standard abbreviations, follow standard screen layouts, show destination, times, platform and punctuality status, and not allow advertising to compromise timetable clarity. The Code covers derivative timetables, A–Z and Line of Route posters, chronological sheets, engineering/special event publicity (via the Engineering Circular), and destination label conventions, and is reviewed annually. Appendices define symbols, formats and codes.
