Description

Which Bus? (2000) investigated where bus users obtain service information, how well they understand timetables, and which timetable features cause difficulty. Methods included on-board surveys (618 passengers), 54 targeted home interviews, focus groups, driver consultations, and a Sydney timetable review. Timetables were the single most used source, but human contact (drivers, phone, other people) was crucial—especially for unfamiliar trips, older people, infrequent users, regional residents, and those who do not speak English at home. Many respondents reported poor comprehension: half wanted clearer timetables, with larger (minimum 12 pt), simpler type, clearer route numbers/names, fewer codes/notes, less shading, and consistent layout. The timetable review found widespread small fonts, angled text, excessive codes, and inconsistent design. Recommendations include a Public Transport Information Strategy, accessible telephone services (ITIS) and multilingual materials, driver training and information distribution, improved bus-stop identification (including audible displays), staffed interchange booths, and a standardized timetable presentation code incorporated into contract standards.
