Description

These 1985 Durham County Council guidelines define a standard, flexible format for public transport timetable pages to present routes, times and stopping places clearly and compactly. The specification has three parts: a page framework, standard symbols, and general presentation rules. Part 1 sets page elements—route title (terminal or key points only), three-letter operator code plus four-character route number and amendment date, separate route lists (for registration), days-of-operation headings, up to three-line column headings, timing points (terminals in CAPITALS, others lower case), timing columns (five-character capacity and conventions for clock-face timings), and up to five footnote lines. Part 2 standardises symbols for whole columns, timing-point lines, and single time cells, including day codes (M, T, W, Th, F, S, Su), school-day codes (Sch, NSch) and guidance on consistent, mnemonic use of letter codes. Part 3 gives presentation rules: order by direction, preferred direction sequencing, repeated day headings, two-direction layouts, efficient use of space and use of dummy headings. All rules are advisory and allow exceptions for clarity.
