Description
This study examines how information on crowding and knowledge of the station influence the positioning strategies of passengers on the platform, a key factor in dwell time excedances. Three strategies are identified: “exit” (position oneself to be close to the exit), “ascent” (minimize the effort to board) and “comfort” (avoid crowded areas). An online experiment with 186 participants varied the position of the platform access, the number of people indicated per car and the position of the exit at the finish. In controlled conditions 60% are placed according to the entrance. When the crowds are displayed, 80% favor comfort, 13% the reduction in walking. If the exit is indicated and opposite to the input, 46% choose the exit and 43% a compromise. In the conflict between comfort and exit speed, 42% prefer a less loaded carriage, even if it is far from the exit. The results show that providing information on crowding strongly modifies choices and suggests that targeted information management can better distribute passengers and make dwell times more reliable. {Original in French]
