Description
Keith Turns examines the diverse state of omnibus timetables in Britain, arguing that despite moves toward standardised formats many variations persist because of the large number of operators (around 700). He outlines a progression from informal wall notices to pocket leaflets and full timetable books, noting that some firms rely solely on wall sheets while others produce polished booklets (examples: Venture Transport’s format and clock changes; King Alfred; Premier Travel). Turns criticises entrenched traditionalism among small independents and some associated companies that resist standard formats and the permissive sharing of timetables—sometimes refusing free publicity from larger firms. He highlights inconsistent publication practices across groups (Northern vs Eastern National and others) and the decline of local comprehensive timetables, partly due to commercial pressures. New city-wide booklets (Newcastle, Carlisle, Swansea) are praised for their bus focus and popularity, while Scottish ABC timetables are commended for value though they cover limited operators.
