Description
Since 1974 Durham County Council has treated its duty to promote coordinated public transport as including development of impartial passenger information. Key initiatives cover publication and wide distribution of comprehensive County Timetable books (jointly produced with major operators), production and library distribution of information leaflets, and installation of over 200 roadside information cases with unique, up-to-date displays. The timetable books list all stage-carriage and rail services impartially, use a geographic route reference system, include extensive ancillary data, and provide town and network maps. Effective roadside information is defined as legible in poor conditions, location-specific, comprehensive yet clear, durable, and easily updated. Early attempts to delegate maintenance to operators failed, so the County Council centralized control: a single A4 master sheet is kept for each case, photographically enlarged for display, centrally filed for easy updating, and checked quarterly. The report also outlines workshop topics on passenger/operator/political information needs, collection/storage, presentation, operational impacts, and emerging technologies.
