Description
This Best Practice Manual advises public transport operators to produce clear, consistent, user‑centred information that meets diverse passenger needs—particularly older people and those with disabilities. It stresses coordinated timetables, maps, stop and vehicle signage, staff advice and electronic systems. Design must accommodate visual, hearing, cognitive, mobility and dexterity impairments, low literacy and non‑English speakers. Key recommendations: use simple, jargon‑free, people‑first language; consistent route numbers, colours and symbols; legible typography (sans serif, sentence case, timetables 10–12 pt, kiosks ≥16 pt); high contrast (avoid red/green); adequate point sizes and spacing; durable matt print (A5–A4). Maps should be simplified, show landmarks, routes, transfers, fares and contact details with legends on the same side. Stops need distinctive, non‑glare signage (route numbers ≥50 mm) and accessible timetable frames. Electronic and on‑board systems should follow ergonomic placement (centre ~155.6 cm), limit glare, provide adjustable text/speech, minimise scrolling, use recognisable icons, large touch targets (≥42.5 cm screens) and support smart cards, audio cues and trained telephone/TTY support.
