Doe’s Directory of Bus Timetables (4th ed., March 1985) by Barry S. Doe lists the minimum timetables required to cover services of the National Bus Company, Scottish Transport Group, Passenger Transport Executives, London Regional Transport and municipal undertakings. It provides operator names, head-office addresses and telephone numbers (included for the first time) and notes where one operator’s timetable “includes” another’s services so a separate timetable is unnecessary. Independent operators are excluded; county council publications often contain additional operator details. The directory explains its own area numbering, selective dating of leaflet batches, and that prices shown are cover prices (postage, binders or set compilations may incur extra charges). It advises requesters to be specific and genuine when ordering free leaflets. The publication also discusses industry debate over using the 24‑hour clock in timetables, reports contributors’ suggestions incorporated into this edition, and expresses the author’s hope to continue future editions until industry deregulation prevents it.
