Description
The FuX (Passenger Information and EXPO) research project, initiated in 1995 for the Hanover region, pursues the goal of developing an integrated information system for local public transport by EXPO 2000. In three phases (conception 1996, prototype development 1997–1999, large-scale implementation by 2000), concepts, prototypes and practical implementation are to be realized. FuX wants to cover the entire spectrum of passenger information – printed media, signage, information terminals, display and announcement systems – and actively involve passengers in development and testing. User surveys showed that passengers mainly need information on routes and departure times as well as easy-to-understand stop information; printed timetable books are rarely used due to their complexity. The market analysis and ideas competition resulted in a system concept with seven sub-projects, including a style guide, orientation system, modular information nodes, autonomous info points and the FuX Infopool network for cross-company data exchange. FuX is to establish standardized, customer-oriented information solutions as a pilot; however, technical quality does not replace a fundamentally good transport service. [Original in German]
