Description

The study by Prof. J. Fiedler (1979) analyses considerable deficiencies in passenger information in local, regional and long-distance transport and proposes a stop-related information system (HIS). The core problem is confusing network maps, timetables that are difficult to read, inconsistent tariffs and interrupted information sequences. HIS demands consistent reference to the respective stop, only necessary partial information, complete information sequences, few uniform elements and portable formats. Suggested modules: accessibility lists, stop-related timetable sheets, line connection lists, stop sequence and grid maps as well as inquiry cards. Standardisation, cooperation between universities and transport authorities and practical implementation are important. Other recommendations concern clear signposting, uniform fare calculation, improved telephone/counter information, vehicle announcements, signage and disruption information. For complex connections, a stop-related request map is suggested. The study also assesses existing timetable books as inconsistent and difficult to use for non-residents. Production via EDP, design guidelines and financing (including advertising, state start-up aid) are intended to ensure dissemination and topicality; Examples and data mainly come from Wuppertal.
