Description

This 2007 Technical Memorandum reports a literature review and national survey supporting a guidebook for printed transit information. It finds printed timetables and maps remain primary pre-trip tools, but many riders struggle—especially with schedules—deterring use. A five-stage task analysis showed strong success locating routes (93.6%) but poor performance using schedules (stages 4–5: 55.6%; overall 52.5%), with literacy and map-reading deficits worsening problems. Recommendations stress clearer, standardized designs: larger sans-serif fonts (10–14 pt), high contrast, limited distinct colors, transfer icons, inset maps, landmarks, separated tables for service days/AM–PM, numbered time points, horizontal timetables, and headway or clockface formats; offer simple and full schedule versions and user education. System maps should be schematic or overlay (a GIS overlay combines both); route maps must match system colors and include time points, transfer points, legends, fares, and brief instructions. A survey of 121 agencies found widespread printed materials but inconsistent standards, small fonts, excessive colors, varied production practices, and demand for a design manual. Prioritize hand-held materials, clear instructions, and usable standards.
