Description
When Derby’s 1930s bus station was demolished for redevelopment, the city created a dispersed temporary bus station of 31 street shelters. Anticipating passenger confusion, Derby City Council engaged FWT to manage all information-changeover stages. FWT analyzed user needs—grouping passengers into three categories by knowledge of destination and route—and designed a user-focused signage system that prioritized route-led information for habitual travellers while retaining destination-led maps for others. They replaced inadequate developer-installed cases with larger Double Royal units and made each shelter a self-contained information point with stop-specific timetables, route diagrams, and prominent eye-level stand identifiers. Posters were paired for clarity, color-coded (red for street, green for bus station), and updated throughout construction. When the new bus station opened in 2010, a coordinated changeback provided multi-modal information and maintained consistency. The project succeeded through detailed planning, user-centered design, clear wayfinding, and close council–supplier partnership.
