Description

The Transport for London (TfL) Pictogram Standard (Issue 4, Jan 2009) provides a single reference for pictograms across all TfL modes and facilities to ensure a consistent, clear corporate image. Based on the British Standard for Pictograms and designed to complement Department for Transport signs, it governs use in signage, print and other applications; where conflict with DfT highway signs occurs, the DfT version takes precedence. Pictograms must be simple, instantly recognisable, and use appropriate colours per sign standards; many are “handed” and default to left-facing. The document catalogs transport mode icons (bus, taxi, coach, car, rail, Underground, DLR, tram, cycling, river craft, airport, etc.), facility symbols (accessibility, toilets, ticketing, information, parking, refreshments, lifts, web, etc.), and general signs (courtesy, queuing, CCTV, embassy, hotel, theatre). Safety symbols cover prohibition (red circle), safe condition (white on green), warning (black on yellow triangle), mandatory (white on blue circle) and fire safety (white on red). For statutory details or exceptions, consult TfL Corporate Design.
