Description
Dr.-Ing. Joachim Fiedler emphasises the central role of passenger information in rapid transit trains for orientation, traffic management and safety. Information systems must be planned from the outset as a uniform, architecturally considered overall concept. Information should be conveyed clearly, sparingly and gradually (rough direction to fine information) in order to avoid multiple decisions. Distinguishable occasions are commandments/prohibitions, warnings, notices and advertising. Signs, pictograms, writing, colours, announcements, illuminated signs and lighting serve as means; familiar features (road signs, UIC symbols), good typography, multilingualism, contrast, location in the direction of view and comprehensibility are decisive. Specific recommendations concern signposts in the road space, access signs, colour-coded arrows, network maps on stair landings, variably adjustable direction indicators, information means in the vehicle (network maps, endurance belts, loudspeakers) as well as personal information options via staff or intercom. Timetables should clearly answer the most important user questions. Conclusion: Uniformity, timely planning and priority of company information over design interests are essential. Short note: In Bruchhausen-Vilsen, an association operates an 8 km museum railway as a historical attraction. [Original in German]
