Description
The MTA unveiled a redesigned New York City subway map—the first major overhaul in 50 years—featuring bolder colors, straighter lines and a simplified, diagrammatic style that echoes Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 design while restoring geographic clarity from Michael Hertz’s later maps. Rolled out on digital screens last fall, the map improves legibility with single-line text, open space, horizontal writing, black bullets with white characters, and a white background to enhance ADA accessibility. It adds clearer transfer, accessibility and safety information in an expanded legend and includes a QR code linking to the MTA website. The agency says the design, produced by its Creative Services Mapping Department, was shaped by public feedback and aims to modernize wayfinding and improve rider experience during service changes. The update builds on the MTA’s 2020 real-time digital map and blends elements of historical designs—Vignelli’s geometric aesthetic and Hertz’s geographic accuracy—while adopting official brand colors and digital-friendly graphics.
