Description
Rising private vehicle use in Malaysia has worsened congestion, prompting interest in public transit. Prasarana Malaysia aims to make transit stress-free, highlighting passenger information systems as key. The authors propose a Frequent Route Map (FRM), which combines a route map with bus frequency schedules displayed graphically on GIS: route line color and thickness indicate service frequency. Unlike purely electronic solutions, the static schematic FRM offers quick spatial orientation for residents and tourists and can be deployed on signage at stations, bus stops, or embedded in mobile apps. It is simple to update, supports markers for fares, intersections and nearby points of interest, and helps users plan journeys, remember routes, assess service availability and accessibility, and reduce waiting times by choosing alternatives when needed. The paper evaluates FRM’s viability in Klang Valley, outlines current transit map issues, reviews international implementations, and proposes a starter FRM model using a simple route example.
