Description
This UIC Leaflet 411 (6th Ed., 1978) defines standards for the form, content and composition of railway timetables to ensure clarity and international consistency. It mandates annual publication at the start of the summer period, collaborative exchange of schedules among railways, and allows supplementary or regional timetables when needed. Technical specifications cover preferred formats (A4/A5), thin colored paper, legible typefaces (minimum point size), and binding. The structure requirements include attractive covers with validity dates, a table of contents, explanatory notes, diagrammatic summary maps, a general information section (fares, reservations, services, passenger formalities), multilingual key information, a station index, travel office addresses, appendices, and controlled use of publicity. Timetable tables must follow model layouts (Appendices 1–2): numbered tables, clear headings, station and train columns, symbols for services and restrictions (Appendix 3), and rules for international, long-distance, regional, car-sleeper and through-coach listings. Implementation for new composition methods began with the 1979–80 period.
