Description
Stuart Linn argues that only a small proportion of the public can understand detailed matrix timetables; they confuse most users much like an electrical wiring diagram. Despite this, matrix timetables remain valuable to professionals because they present comprehensive two‑dimensional information. For customers, however, clear marketing and simple route maps are far more effective—Southern Vectis’s Island map, like the London Underground map, gives an accessible overview, while overly detailed maps (e.g., Wigan) can bewilder. Timetables and publicity should ensure staff competence, build public awareness and confidence, and stimulate usage. Key principles: keep information simple, minimise route variations, avoid vague notices such as “until further notice,” and use a variety of media tailored to purpose. Linn’s ideal is market‑driven services with limited annual timetable changes, a national, routinely updated timetable/fare database, widespread electronic access (including internet), simple high‑quality printed guides and at‑stop information, and real‑time displays. Southern Vectis has trialled electronic systems; wider implementation needs commitment and funding.
