Description

This memo outlines the Bus Information Review (BIR) reporting final research results. The BIR was comprehensive, examining map styles, timetables, route signage (interior and exterior), bus stop flags, informational posters, “where to catch your bus” notices, Local Bus Guides, the bus information phone line, electronic information at stops and in buses, information staff, interchange units and other initiatives. Research identified three preferred map styles (the local “Squircle”, the All-London Penrose, and a combined approach) and found customers prefer broad-frequency formats for high-frequency routes, while routes under 15-minute intervals need full departure times. Four line-diagram variants and nineteen potential Local Bus Guide sections were tested; seven are already standard and twelve are new proposals (e.g., small central/tube maps, fares, other LT services, amenity lists with grid refs and phone numbers). Several BIR recommendations are already implemented: named/directional bus-stop signs, “Bus Information” signs at BR termini, the bus information number on publicity, and a new Local Bus Guide design.
