Description
The Wayfinding Design Manual (NR/GN/CIV/300/01, Dec 2022) prescribes Network Rail’s standards for consistent, accessible station directional signage. Aimed at station managers, operators, project teams and designers, it supports statutory accessibility and assurance processes and covers enhancements, replacements, renewals and temporary/permanent works (excluding operational lineside, heritage, safety and CIS). Key principles are reducing clutter, consistent placement and clear sightlines, mapping passenger flows to locate decision points, and progressive disclosure with an information hierarchy. Inclusive design guidance addresses contrast, typography, mounting heights, wheelchair clearances and minimum headroom (2.3 m). The manual defines a sign family with sizing rules (typical cap-heights e.g. 210 mm; smaller 68.5–100 mm), arrow geometry and rules (max four destinations, “Way Out” at bottom, arrows on left), illumination (min 100 lux) and integration with retail, security and digital systems
