Description
The editorial commemorates the 90th anniversary of Henry Beck’s 1933 London Underground diagram and its lasting design rules—orthogonal and 45° diagonals—whose schematization has shaped transit maps worldwide. Beck did not invent schematic mapping but produced a timeless, usable image that balances simplicity, coherence and recognizability while minimally distorting central London. Whether it is a “map” is debated, but modern definitions and public perception validate the term. Schematic mapping simplifies line geometry (often octolinear), expands central areas and regularizes station spacing to prioritize topological clarity over geographic accuracy. Contemporary pressures—network growth, multiple modes and accessibility information—create visual clutter, especially in small formats, while digital journey planners offer personalized detail. The special issue reappraises Beck’s legacy, highlighting its pedagogical, cultural and commercial influence, and warns against indiscriminate “Becksploitation”: schematic conventions can mislead on complex or differently scaled networks. Analytical tools (VisDNA), automated layout and AI show promise but lack the context-sensitive judgment of human designers, underscoring the need for careful, expert application.
