Description

SEStran’s Bus Passenger Information Strategy (BPIS), prepared by Atkins and published April 2008, sets out a regional framework to raise and harmonise bus information standards across eight local authorities (Clackmannanshire, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Fife, Midlothian, Scottish Borders, West Lothian). Motivated by legislative responsibilities under the Transport (Scotland) Act 2001 and wide variability in existing provision, the strategy seeks to improve awareness, availability and accuracy of information for existing and potential users, including rural travellers. It defines Core standards mandatory across the region and aspirational measures adaptable to local urban/rural conditions, assigns responsibilities between authorities and operators, addresses cost apportionment, and proposes a staged delivery programme with monitoring. Key aims include defining required information levels, ensuring up-to-date publicity, identifying distribution and delivery mechanisms, and reviewing the strategy after five years. The document accompanies a fuller report covering best practice, stakeholder consultation, implementation and monitoring.
