Description
Issue 8 of the Transport for London Basic Elements Standard sets rules for a consistent visual identity. It mandates the exclusive Johnston 100 typeface with specific weights for headings (Medium) and body copy (Light at ≤12pt, Regular above 12pt) and minimum point sizes tied to viewing distance. The typographic policy, developed with RNIB, promotes accessibility: mixed case text, left-aligned body copy, minimum sizes (12pt for A4), no italics, no tracking or reduced leading, clear contrast, limited centering, and restrictions on text over images and decorative typefaces. Each transport mode has a unique roundel with strict reproduction rules and an exclusion zone (0.25x). TfL logotypes and combined marks (roundel + Transport for London logotype) must use full colour, with marks minimum 32mm wide and a third‑party variant without the ‘Every Journey Matters’ strapline. The Mayor of London endorsement is positioned bottom-left in Pantone 072. Modal and line colour palettes and identity strip usage are specified. Contact TfL Corporate Design for guidance.
