Description
The TfL Bus Station Signs Standard (Issue 1, Sept 2007) prescribes design, colour, format and installation rules for London Buses station signage to ensure clarity, consistency and safety. Core elements include the London Buses roundel, house colours and New Johnston typeface, with NCS/Pantone colour references and UV-protected materials. Layout rules define typography (x-height, spacing, case), type sizes tied to viewing distance, 50mm-grid panel dimensions, rounded corners and pictogram use. Directional conventions cover arrow design, panel ordering, stacking and point letters for boarding bays. Sign types include long-range totems and station identifiers, medium-range directional/enquiry/display headers and electronic tri-colour LED displays (red for emergency, green for disruption, yellow for arrivals), route indicator slats, and short-range paper/door signs. Safety signage mandates combined symbol/text and five colour-coded types (mandatory blue, prohibition red, safe green, warning yellow/black, fire red). Accessibility, mounting heights, pavement clearance, workmanship, quality control and approval procedures are specified; TfL Corporate Design contacts are provided for artwork and further guidance.
