Description
This paper surveys passenger information provision by public transport authorities, from printed timetables to modern real-time systems, and explains why investment has grown. Passengers and potential users demand clear information—telephone enquiries and research (London, West Midlands) show information increases journeys and revenue and attracts tourists. The text details how information technology transformed planning, scheduling and operations: computerized scheduling optimizes running times, vehicle and staff allocations, and reduces costs; garage administration and payroll can be automated; radio and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) enable real-time service control. Traffic congestion causes wide running-time variability, inflating vehicle and staff requirements; better planning and control can save resources or improve service. Integrating AVL, radio and allocation systems supports projects like London’s Countdown, which displays predicted bus arrivals at stops and can increase revenue despite upfront costs. The author stresses that useful IT solutions need not be prohibitively expensive—smaller systems can greatly improve public information and service reliability.
