Description

The 1996 Code of Good Practice from the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee gives clear guidelines to improve legibility of bus timetable books, leaflets and stop displays. It stresses accessible design because many users have impaired vision and small improvements aid independence. Print should use upright sans‑serif type, predominantly lower case, clear numerals, at the largest practicable size (minimum 8pt); black print on pale backgrounds (pale yellow preferred) and good quality, non‑glossy paper are recommended. Layout guidance includes prominent route numbers and concise headings, operator details, simple route diagrams, limited and well‑chosen timing points, 24‑hour clock use, clear day‑of‑week presentation, readable columns with guiding horizontal lines and minimal, consistent reference codes with keys. Timetable covers must clearly identify area and date, include maps, indexes, service changes, contact details and availability in alternative formats (Braille, cassette, Minicom). Timetables at stops should be enlarged, well‑lit and avoid thin lines; full timetables are required for longer routes. Dates and validity periods should always be shown.
