Description
The NACTO Transit Street Design Guide emphasizes clear, accessible passenger information and wayfinding at all transit stops. Every stop should display a stop name/identifier, route identification, maps, schedules, and an indication of stop location; real-time arrival displays and mobile app integration are recommended to improve satisfaction and ridership. Information must be placed predictably (overhead or eye-level) at progressive decision points, protected from weather, and designed to avoid clutter. Signage must meet ADA requirements—high contrast, readable characters, and accessible iconography—while audible announcements are preferred alternatives for riders with visual disabilities. Wayfinding should include route strip maps, system/transfer maps, directions and walking times to nearby destinations, and connections to regional services and bike/share options. Use consistent branding, tactile cues, detectable platform markings, and numbering/lettering where stops cluster. Consider one-way street layouts, level of detail, and environmental noise when implementing real-time and audible elements to ensure clarity and usability for all riders.
