Airline and Airport Guides

The development of the Official Aviation Guide of the Airways—first published in Chicago in February 1929—mirrored the organizational growth of the commercial aviation industry. Conceived in the tradition of the 19th-century Official Guide of the Railways (originally established in 1868), the airline guide adapted the standardized, comprehensive reference model built for rail networks to the rapidly expanding air transport sector. Corporate ties between rail and air publishing were tight; in 1938, the National Railway Publication Company acquired the aviation guide, reinforcing the structural and operational methodologies inherited from railroad timetable publishing. The publication went through notable ownership changes, including its acquisition by Dun & Bradstreet in 1962 and later integration into Robert Maxwell’s media empire before eventually merging into Reed Elsevier in 1993.

Originally published monthly to capture frequent network adjustments, the guide underwent functional transformations driven by early computerization in the mid-20th century. Prior to 1958, flight information was structured by individual airline schedules, requiring users to cross-reference carrier sections manually. By 1958, advancements in computer processing enabled the launch of the "Quick Reference Edition," reorganizing data into city-pair origin-and-destination formats. This computational evolution allowed the publisher to supply flight schedules directly to the earliest Computer Reservation Systems (CRSs) by 1962 and help establish the IATA Standard Schedules Information Manual (SSIM) protocols in 1972. To accommodate the expanding market, the publication split into distinct regional and functional editions, including the North American Edition, the Worldwide/International Edition, cargo guides, and handheld Pocket Flight Guides.

When compared to British competitors such as Bradshaw’s and the ABC World Airways Guide, the Official Guide (OG/OAG) displayed distinct formatting, geographical, and operational philosophies. Bradshaw’s, relying on its established 19th-century railway guide layout, initially attempted to incorporate air travel via supplementary international air schedules before fading as dedicated aviation compilations took over. The ABC World Airways Guide, established in the United Kingdom in 1946, served as the primary European counterpart to the American-centric OG. While the North American OG historically prioritized dense domestic schedules, point-to-point connections, and carrier-focused layouts, the ABC guide was built from the ground up around international long-haul itineraries, cross-border travel regulations, and routing fares. The eventual 1993 corporate merger of ABC International and OAG consolidated these complementary approaches into a unified global travel intelligence standard.
