Description
The project describes the development and testing of an automatic timetable information and information system (AFI) for the Hamburg transport area, funded by the BMFT with the participation of HVV, HHA, SNV and Dornier (duration 15.12.1977–31.12.1979). The aim is to provide users with driving-related information quickly and easily at any time. The system consists of a central computer for route optimisation, public machines at traffic junctions and an automatic telephone directory enquiry. Vending machines use a microfilm reader (approx. 17,000 addresses) and print trip recommendations within ~15 s; the telephone announcement works with the VOTRAX synthetic voice system. The core is a four-stage route search procedure (connection search, pre-evaluation without disk access, driving data determination, evaluation). The evaluation is based on travel time equivalent to travel time (waiting, travel, transfer times), comfort and fare; special formulas weigh transfer times and comfort. Tests showed 87% agreement with user preferences. The operational trials (May/June 1979) include five vending machine locations, five trunk lines, user surveys and accompanying research for further development. {Original in German]
