Description

Halcrow’s March 2012 report for the Public Transport Users’ Committee reviews public transport information (PTI) provision in Wales, finds it industry-led, inconsistent and often based on outdated guidance, and identifies a few exemplars (Oxfordshire, Derbyshire, Brighton & Hove, London). Research included case studies, passenger surveys (1,273 respondents) and stakeholder consultation. Key findings: urban users prefer electronic information (web, RTPI, SMS, apps) while rural users rely on paper and at-stop maps; outdated or fragmented PTI reduces confidence; major barriers are limited funding, staffing, ownership and weak legal duties. Recommendations call for coordinated partnership governance, clarified roles, sustained funding, monitoring and enforcement, Welsh Government coordination and a national template for PTI. Operational proposals include design and distribution standards (bilingual Welsh/English, 24‑hour time, accessible formats), twice-yearly service change dates, Traveline Cymru as the single electronic provider, expanded RTPI at interchanges, consistent roadside signage and greater use of apps, SMS, QR and on-vehicle information.
