Description
Spaceagency developed Network Rail’s new wayfinding, selecting a ‘Minimal Design’ that required refined typography and pictograms. Margaret Calvert, with Henrik Kubel, created Rail Alphabet 2 as a bespoke, lighter, and more legible successor to the original Rail Alphabet—designed to serve signage and print, reinforce Network Rail identity, and avoid Helvetica associations. The typeface features a distinctive vertical stroke-to-x-height ratio and subtle letterform changes; Kubel and Spaceagency also adapted letter elements into new, British-focused pictograms (e.g., London taxi, New Bus for London) for contemporary needs like gender-neutral toilets and vaping zones, rather than using ISO symbols. Spaceagency’s Wayfinding Design Manual, unveiled at the “Woman at Work” exhibition, prescribes sign layouts, arrow usage, groupings, exterior and platform graphics, and accessibility colors. Initial rollout is planned at major stations (likely Paddington). The approach—endorsed in the Williams-Shapps plan as Great British Railways’ corporate type—aims to restore a consistent national rail identity, though some design choices provoked public debate.
